Traces of Orbit
2023-2024
“Heaven is round, Earth is square” is a central concept in ancient Chinese cosmology. The circle represents not only a geometric form observed in astronomy and geography, but also a philosophical symbol of order, harmony, and cyclical continuity. Like pi—an infinite yet constant number—each circle embodies both change and the unknown, while evoking a sense of stability and unity.
This project employs the technique of lumen printing, placing materials such as color filters, flower petals, and translucent objects onto photosensitive paper and exposing them to sunlight to produce circular impressions. The prints are later hand-colored, exploring the interplay between chance and control. Each piece serves as a physical record of the interaction between light and matter, as well as a contemporary reinterpretation of the symbolic power of the circle.
